Backdrops

I just came across some old pictures. These are all backdrops which I painted during my time in NY. I guess nowadays this is all done digitally, but then we still painted these backgrounds on huge canvas rolls which were then hung on poles on the set. It was a lot of fun to work on the floor of the big photo studios in manhattan with loud music and amazing views on to the hudson river.
Here's a selection of some of my favorites.

For the next ones we cut shapes out of styrofoam and covered them with black glitter.

This was an ad for Aveda. My friend Patrick Perrier and I cut big sheets of suede for 2 days in a row in his loft in Williamsburg. It was a lot of work, but the result was amazing, I find.

This was a Frida Kahlo story for Elle.

And this one: Patti Labelle and The Soul Sisters photographed for Vanity Fair.

I have had the chance to work with many amazing photographers like Walter Chin, Michel Comte, Nathaniel Goldberg, Pamela Hanson, Mary Ellen Mark, Ellen von Unwerth and Christian Witkin among many others.

But all the photos posted above are by Ruven Afanador. The prop styling was done by Jocelyn Beaudoin.
I loved working with them!
