I am really happy to have sold one drawing and one painting at the fair. Below I will post the text about the new works.
Kim Bartelts new works with the title 'Papers' are collages in small to medium format. With reference to her last big cycle of works 'Right Here', these paintings also deal with the basic categories of perception, the distinction between that which is near, and that which is distant; the distinction between foreground and background; the distinction between that which lies upon, and that which lies underneath; between fragmentation and completeness.
The artist cuts geometrical shapes from tissue paper, they are deliberately uneven, but foremost rectangular shapes. The shapes are never perfect. They are arranged next to each other until the right relation between each other and the actual canvas shape is found.
The papers are transparent, and the layer underneath, the texture of the canvas, can still be seen.
While being applied the papers eventually get damaged, they get dents, scratches and signs of usage. Like wrinkles on thin skin.
The papers are metaphors for the different layers of life. They talk about the transitory nature of life, the preciousness of the moment and the cycles of life with its coming and going.
